Cheekpiececomplete left proper cheekpiece, or earflap, which was part of a helmet.  They vary slightly in shape.   Although whole helmets rarely survive and are therefore rare in Virginia collections, several of these burgonet cheekpieces have been found and are now in the DHR collections.

This example was recovered  from Jordan's Journey, a 17th-century settlement site in Prince George County near Hopewell, Virginia.
