Dagger Guardany kind of sheath knife may be called a dagger.  A guard of the same type as this archaeological example is illustrated on a dagger in its sheath on the rear view of one of the men in the Jacob de Gheyn engravings.

This example was recovered  from Jordan's Journey, a 17th-century settlement site in Prince George County near Hopewell, Virginia.
