Matchlock Panearly 17th-century.  A major feature of the matchlock firing mechanism is the priming pan which was welded to the barrel or the lockplate and had to be opened manually by the operator to reveal the powder.

The Jacob de Gheyn engraving used for our Musketeer image map shows the pan in the open position similar to this example, which was recovered from Jordan's Journey near Hopewell in Prince George County.
