"The Rebel Iron-Clad Fleet Forcing the Obstructions in James River"
The Confederates reached the obstructions 90 minutes behind
schedule, as the river's tide was falling. With U.S. gunners
firing wildly, the torpedo boat Scorpion
dashed forward to find the gap. Beyond it lay open water and the Onondaga—and
beyond her, nothing but a dozen miles of hard steaming
to an anchorage packed with cargo ships and disaster for the United States.
