The Consultants Directory, updated annually, is provided as a service to property owners, local governments, and state and federal sponsors in Virginia seeking the professional assistance of consultants with expertise in historic preservation. Code of Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly provides the Code of Virginia online. There are a number of sections of the Code that are preservation laws.

Financial Incentives Guide.  In addition to the financial assistance offered by the department, preservation funding opportunities exist from local, state, and national sources. The Financial Incentives Guide  provides funding options for museums, historic sites, homeowners, neighborhoods, localities, investors, and businesses. This is a long document.  To print only certain sections, refer to the Table of Contents and type the appropriate page numbers in the "pages from" section of Adobe PRINT dialog box.  

Publications. The department publishes invaluable reference tools and guidebooks, archaeological reports, and more. For information on DHR publications, and to find out how to order, see the publications section of this site.

Technical Assistance.  For help with the hands-on challenges of historic rehabilitations,the "Preservation Briefs" provide in-depth technical assistance summaries on common problems that arise in maintaining and rehabilitating a historic property. The "Technical Assistance Articles" have appeared in the Preservation in Progress newsletters and are provided for easy reference.

In order to read and print the following forms (.pdf), Adobe Acrobat Reader must be installed on your computer (free software). Download Acrobat Reader now. Some forms are also available in MSWord (2000) format and are identified by the .doc file extension. For additional information about each program, select the program name to link to its Web page.

Archaeology Permits. These forms are for archaeologists who plan on or expect to conduct investigations involving human burials or on state lands.

Archives Search Service. For the fee schedule, services description, and submission requirements, for having DHR archives staff process your research request, visit the Archives Search Service section of this site. The request form below also includes the required Conditions for Use statement that must be signed and returned with the request.

Environmental Review. The Project Review Application form is for those who are seeking comment from the department on a project that will be funded, assisted, or licensed by a federal agency on behalf of a federal agency. To streamline the process, a separate form has been created for cell tower project applications.

National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register Programs.  These forms serve as the starting points for the historical and architectural documentation DHR staff needs in order to assess your property's eligibility for the registers. Refer to the guide to the evaluation process before beginning. Once completed, the form must be submitted to your nearest regional office. Please note that the evaluation process of the forms usually takes three to four months to complete.

Permission to Reproduce and Publish an Image.   Use this form to request permission to reproduce and publish an image from the department's archives.  

Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program. To ensure that your historic rehabilitation is eligible for state income tax credits, you need to complete the three-step certification process. An application checklist is provided to guide you in submitting your application. The first step is to print and fill in the Part 1 application together with the other materials noted on the checklist. If you are planning to apply for the federal credit as well as the state credit, note that your application should include two copies of the federal form, which can be obtained on the National Park Service Web site. The department tax credit staff will contact you about moving forward. Note: Parts 2 and 3 require a processing fee; use the billing statement form below to determine the fee for your application. 

State Historic Preservation Grants. Nonprofit museums, historic sites, and historical organizations and local governments are eligible for state historic preservation grants. The grants are funded by the Virginia General Assembly and applications must be submitted to DHR by the day the General Assembly convenes. Refer to the Historic Preservation Grants Overview section for details about application requirements. 

Survey.Professionals or trained volunteers surveying a historic district, town, city, or county use these forms to record all historic architectural resources and archaeological resources.
