Restoring the Well.
During the 35 years since the well's initial restoration, time and elements have
degraded the viewing area (top two photos) and the ice well's interior
(bottom), where salt from water seepage has collected. A
restoration team, comprised of the museum director and preservation architects
and engineers, have proposed a plan that
will stabilize the interior, reduce moisture, and improve
ventilation. The new design will also
enhance a visitor’s ability to view and understand the rarity and historical
importance of the well. The entire project will be completed within the current footprint
of the present-day ice well deck.
