In Search of Virginia’s Maritime Heritage

“In Search of Virginia’s Maritime Heritage,” a new initiative of DHR’s State Archaeology Division, focuses on archaeological sites lying along the shore or underwater.

DHR works with federal, state, and private partners in an effort to locate, study, and protect the commonwealth’s underwater historic property. The new initiative is intended to provide opportunities for avocational archaeologists, recreational divers, and other interested citizens to participate in DHR’s Underwater Archaeology Program.

In Search of Virginia’s Maritime Heritage will launch with a free public event at The Mariners’ Museum and Park on Saturday, August 24, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Pre-registration is recommended.

For more information about underwater archaeology, or to pre-register for the August 24 event, contact John Broadwater, DHR’s Acting State Underwater Archaeologist, 757-645-7836.
