The Courthouse Square's Evolution:

This postcard image from the 1920s—before the 1929 remodeling—offers a view of the the square's changing landscape design, centering on the Confederate memorial, under the UDC's direction. Although not pictured here, the square also had a public well and a brick jail, constructed circa 1912.
