The purpose of the African American Schools in Virginia Multiple Property Document (MPD) is to provide a context that can utilized to facilitate the listing in the registers of Virginia’s African American schools, such as the Cuckoo School in Louisa County, during the period of racial segregation in educational facilities in the state. The MPD discusses schools constructed during specific eras in Virginia’s history: the community-building schools (ca 1870 – ca 1902); privately- and publicly-built schools (ca 1902 – ca 1931); New Deal Era schools (ca 1932 – ca 1945); and Equalization Era schools (ca 1946 – ca 1968). An MPD discussing the history of schools constructed with financial assistance from the Julius Rosenwald Fund in the early- to mid-20th century has also been approved by the registers.
Many properties listed in the registers are private dwellings and are not open to the public, however many are visible from the public right-of-way. Please be respectful of owner privacy.
