Established in 1825, the Rockingham County town of Mount Crawford developed along the historic transportation corridor known as the Great Wagon Road, later called the Valley Pike and now U.S. Route 11. With its proximity to the North River and location along this important north-south trade route through the Shenandoah Valley, the town emerged in the early 19th century as a commercial and industrial hub serving the surrounding rural area. Following construction of the Valley Pike in the mid-1830s, the town developed in a pattern characteristic of turnpike communities, with linear growth extending along the roadway rather than expanding into a traditional grid of streets and blocks. The Mount Crawford Historic District encompasses most of the dwellings, commercial buildings, and churches lining both sides of Main Street (U.S. Route 11), within the original town limits. The earliest extant buildings in the district date to the first quarter of the 19th century and include several vernacular log dwellings, now clad in modern siding, and two Federal-style brick houses. Many of the remaining buildings date from the mid-19th through the early-20th centuries and consist primarily of frame dwellings with Folk Victorian detailing.
