Cheekpiece —complete
right proper cheekpiece, or earflap, was part of a helmet,
probably a burgonet type.  In this image you can see the holes for the
rivet attachment on the upper left.   Although whole helmets seldom survive and are
therefore rare in Virginia collections, the cheekpiece
section is found more often.   This example was recovered
from Jordan’s Journey, a 17th-century settlement site in Prince George
County near Hopewell, Virginia.

Currently on view in the
conservation laboratory window display exhibit at the Virginia
Department of Historic Resources’ front lobby.
