Located in the suburbs of Newport News, the Daily Press Building was designed by prolific local architect Forrest W. Coile to house all the newspaper’s operations, including administrative, reporting, and sales staff as well as printing and distribution of the newspaper itself. Completed between 1967 and 1968 by the engineering firm Uhl, Hall & Rich, the building’s New Formalist design – a rarity in the Newport News area – merges classical principles and modern construction methods, with traditional architectural elements rendered in abstract, geometric forms. Established in 1896 and in continuous operation since, the Daily Press occupied several downtown buildings prior to the completion of this facility, and it remains an essential part of the local media landscape in Virginia’s Middle Peninsula and Hampton Roads region.
