The rural crossroads community of Watson in southeastern Loudoun County, roughly nine miles south of Leesburg, is centered around a historic general store and extends along Watson Road and Red Hill Road. Historically a mixed-race community, it lies near what was thought to be the largest community of free Blacks in the county prior to emancipation. First established as a congregation in 1896, First Baptist Church Watson functioned not only as a religious institution, but as the primary public gathering space for African Americans in this part of rural Loudoun County and the place where they engaged communally in efforts to promote educational advancement and civil rights. The current church, built in 1957, and its associated cemetery, which dates to at least 1909, are nominated under the African American Churches in Virginia Multiple Property Document.
