Designed according to Garden City principles, the Barcroft Apartments community in Arlington County features fifty-seven Colonial Revival–style apartment buildings as well as a commercial building, garages, and bus shelters carefully arranged in a landscaped setting. Development occurred in two phases between 1941 and 1953, with sections designed by architects William H. Harris and Albert D. Lueders, AIA. Like many other such complexes, the Barcroft Apartments were built to meet the growing housing needs from a massive influx of workers to the nation’s capital, with Arlington County – the fastest-growing county in the nation at the time – serving as a testing ground for new building programs initiated by the federal government. The Barcroft Apartments are nominated under the Garden Apartments, Apartment Houses and Apartment Complexes in Arlington County MPD as an excellent example of the multi-family garden apartment developments built throughout Arlington during the period between 1934 and 1954.
