Located near the town of Hot Springs in south-central Bath County, Ingalls Field occupies a plateau-like section of the summit ridge of Warm Springs Mountain. The approximately fifty-acre airfield contains two contributing historic resources: a partly preserved, T-shaped pair of 1931 grass runways and an early 1930s terminal building. Ingalls Field was constructed in the 1930s by the Virginia Hot Springs Company, developer of The Homestead resortthe county’s principal economic enterprise during the 20th century. World War I flying ace and Homestead board member David S. Ingalls, for whom the airport is named, inaugurated the field by landing on it in May 1931. The novelty, cachet, and speed of air travelunder five hours from New York’s Pennsylvania Station to the airfieldcontributed to the resort experience for The Homestead’s guests. The original airfield was superseded by the completion of a new terminal and paved runway in 1961, though one of the grass runways remains in use.
