The Western Loudoun County’s Rural Road Networks Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPD) was created to catalogue, interpret, and preserve the rural roads of western Loudoun County. Established from the 18th through the early 20th centuries, these interlaced transportation corridors include cultural routes developed from Native American migratory paths and from European explorers and settlers, as well as engineered routes designed for the movement of goods and armies. Loudoun’s rural roads can be divided into five thematic periods: Settlement and Growth (1735-1801); the Turnpike Era and Associated Feeder Roads (1802-1860); the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Growth (1861-1905); the Automobile Era and the Re-organization of Road Management (1906-1962); and Development Pressure and Coalition for Preservation (1963-1974).
