Use your mobile device or computer to learn about places listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places, read the text of local historical highway markers, and get a feel for just how much archaeology and architecture surrounds us.

Move the map to learn about your area

On a smartphone, use your location to find historic resources near you or search an address to explore what DHR has recorded in the area.

Take a virtual trip to explore Virginia’s past or plan a visit to learn more about local history. Places Explorer is an educational tool developed by DHR Archives for informational purposes. While it is fun (and addictive!), the site is not the official source for NRHP listing status, resource eligibility for listing, or other management information. Learn more about research in DHR Archives.

DHR will be adding more information and features to Places Explorer soon. Do you have feedback or questions about historic resources? Let us know!
