Originally constructed in 1934, the Henry Clay Elementary School in the Town of Ashland has evolved into one of the most architecturally distinctive schools in Hanover County. The original Colonial Revival-style school was designed by architects Luther P. Hartsook and Edward F. Sinnott, and completed with federal funds from the newly established Public Works Administration and from the Virginia Literary Fund. The first addition in 1955 resulted in three interior courtyards and created a plan that was followed by subsequent additions in 1968, 1982, and 1998. In addition to the school, the property includes the ca. 1951 War Memorial Building, which was historically used by both civic groups and the school as a gymnasium and auditorium. The Henry Clay Elementary School closed in the spring of 2024.
