Located in the prominent Rivermont neighborhood of Lynchburg, the 53acre Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Historic District encompasses the core historic campus of one of the earliest and longest-operating women’s colleges in Virginia and the broader South. Established in 1891, the college evolved over time in response to rising demand for higher education as women’s roles in society changed following the Civil War. The earliest five buildings on Randolph-Macon Woman’s College’s campus were constructed between 1891 and 1906 and include the individually listed Main Hall, as well as Jones Memorial Library, Carnegie Science Building, East Hall, and West Hall are arranged in a linear row at the top of a hill overlooking Rivermont Avenue. The contributing Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Historic District buildings were designed by notable local and national architects and represent a wide range of architectural styles – including Queen Anne, Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, Neo-Expressionism, and the International Style – yet maintain a cohesive identity through scale, setting, and red brick construction.
