The Flanary Archaeological Site in Scott County contains stratified deposits dating to the Archaic and Late Woodland periods of Indian settlement. Well-preserved Archaic period deposits (8000 to 1000 B.C.) occur rarely in the western portion of the state, and the site’s Late Woodland period remains (A.D. 800-1600) overlying these deposits could provide significant data for regional studies on Indian subsistence and settlement. The presence of artifacts at the site relating to the Indians of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina is valuable in documenting the interactions of Virginia Indians with their neighbors to the south.
