The historic Mary N. Smith High School, currently the Mary Nottingham Smith Cultural Enrichment Center, is located west of U.S. Highway 13, just outside the Town of Accomac on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Built in 1953, the school is significant as an example of an Equalization Era School, with its role being to provide segregated educational amenities for Black students that were “equal” to those of White schools in an effort by lawmakers to stave off integration. Named after Mary Nottingham Smith, a notable educator on the Eastern Shore who prioritized the growth and learning of African American childrenthe school was integrated and converted to a middle school in 1971. The Mary N. Smith High School is nominated under the African American Schools in Virginia Multiple Property Document.
