Located one block north of downtown Buena Vista, Parry McCluer High School served as the principal public school for the city’s White high school and grade school students following its completion in 1924, and for African American students as well following integration in the mid-1960s. The school library also served as the Buena Vista Public Library from 1948 to ca. 1971. Designed by State Board of Education architect Raymond V. Long and named for local educator and school superintendent John Parry McCluer, the original Classical Revival building is constructed of brick laid in four-course common bond and features a Doric portico, decorative brickwork, and original steel-framed windows. A 1947-48 addition houses a library with round-arched windows and a corner entry in a classical surround, while a Modernist gymnasium wing was completed in 1955. Also located on the 5.5-acre school grounds is the Louis V. Schreiner Field, which is surrounded by a concrete block wall built by the Works Progress Administration in 1939. Although the high school program relocated in 2001, the building continues to house Parry McCluer Middle School along with school board offices.
