Originally constructed in 1930, the six-story Virginia Home occupies the block bound by Hampton, Powhatan, S. Meadow, and Appomattox Streets in Richmond’s Byrd Park neighborhood. The Virginia Home for the Incurables began in 1894 as Mary Tinsley Greenhow’s quest to fill a void in care for permanently disabled Virginians, who were often faced with almshouses characterized by harsh conditions, little sanitation and safety, and minimal standard of care. Greenlow’s efforts created a haven for a neglected population, and The Virginia Home remains the only institution of its kind in Virginia. Modifications to the Art Deco-style building in the decades following construction, particularly the addition in 1970, have increased the facility’s size, allowing it to provide more aid to residents, accept more applicants, and adapt to changing medical trends.
